Research Hypnosis for Childbirth

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a naturally induced state of relaxed concentration - a state of mind and body in which we communicate suggestions to our subconscious mind. This part of our mind influences what we think, how we feel, and the choices we make. It can control pain.

There is no magic to achieving success with self-hypnosis. Almost anyone who chooses to can reach deep relaxation and re-directed focus. When you birth your baby using BirthSkills , what you will experience is similar to the daydreaming or focusing that occurs when you are engrossed in a good book or movie. You will be conversant and in good spirits - totally relaxed but in full control.

You will be aware of your surges (aka contractions) but will be able to determine the strength to which you feel each wave. You will experience your birthing in an atmosphere of calm and relaxation, without the fear and tension that cause pain. Your body's natural anaesthesia (endorphins) will replace the stress hormones (catecholamines) that create pain. When it is time for your baby to be born you will be fully awake and involved.

Some of the Benefits of using hypnosis for childbirth:

Fewer drugs or no drugs at all means less risk of side effects on mother and baby.
Shorter labours - resistance of the birthing muscles as a response to pain is minimized or eliminated.
An alert, calm mother ready to welcome and body with her baby.
A calm, comfortable birthing environment.
Breech and posterior babies can be turned using hypnosis and relaxation.
Fewer interventions and complications during labour.
Babies are calmer, sleep and feed better due to fewer/no drugs and less stress hormones in their systems.

Hypnosis for Childbirth: What Is It and Does It Work?

Hypnosis for childbirth is an evidence-based method of relieving pain and discomfort during the process of welcoming your child into the world. There have been numerous clinical trials showing the benefits of using hypnosis and relaxation techniques during labour and the methods of hypnosis have been developing for many many years.

LEARN MORE ABOUT THE RESEARCH

Mention Labour an expectant mum in her last trimester, and most will tense up; some will turn white with fear. For some women, childbirth is a very fearful event, but for women using hypnosis and relaxation techniqes, it is merely a challenge.

These wise women use hypnosis to eliminate pain and fear from the birthing experience. In the past, the word "hypnosis" conjured up images of stage hypnotists and people acting like chickens. Now it is common for hypnosis to be used therapeutically in many areas of medicine, dental anaesthesia and personal therapy sessions. Many people wanting to improve in self-confidence, health or work are turning to this powerful tool to help them change their lives.

 Some FACTS about hypnosis:

All hypnosis is self-hypnosis; the practitioner is only a guide. Each individual chooses to enter into a hypnotic state, the depth of their trance and can stay in and come out at will.

Approximately 90-95% of the population can be hypnotized. Willingness, belief and motivation have great influence over the depth of your trance.

During hypnosis you are neither asleep nor unconscious, and will always "come out" when you wish.

Stronger-minded and stronger-willed people are easier to hypnotize; not the other way around as is usually assumed. Those with scientific or analytical minds are most likely to find hypnosis 'easy'.

You cannot be made to reveal  information or do anything against your will while in hypnosis. And a good practitioner will not ask you to.

Hypnosis is simply a tool that you may use to tap into your inner mind, the sub-conscious, where your memories, experiences and beliefs are stored.

What about Hypnosis for Childbirth?

Hypnosis is used in medical and dental procedures with great success by patients needing or wishing to undergo surgeries with no drugs and no pain. We know from many years of practice, that the mind can be trained to experience discomfort as only pressure, this is also how hypnosis can be used for birthing..

Furthermore, in labour, the more relaxation the mother experiences, the more comfort she will have, and the depth of relaxation necessary can easily be achieved with hypnosis, as physical relaxation is learned and practiced daily in preparation for birth using guided visualizations followed by positive hypnotic suggestions. When the critical conscious mind is by-passed with hypnosis, the inner mind can be trained to understand and believe that you will be calm, confident and comfortable during your birthing - which you will be.

Fear and Expectation

In other cultures, childbirth is regarded as a natural, normal event in a woman's life. The birthing women are given support from other women, and children are often present to witness the event. In this way, birth is celebrated and honoured. Young girls then grow up with the belief system that birth is a positive event and their expectations of childbirth reflect this attitude. As a result, their births are similar to their predecessors; without pain and fear. They have a positive expectation of childbirth. In our culture, it is very much the opposite. For many generations we have been told that delivering a baby is many hours of painfully agonizing work, to be faced with fear and trepidation. We have heard stories from well-meaning friends and family that send shivers up our spines, and so the legacy continues. We experience pain in childbirth, in part because we very much expect to!

When learning about how the mind controls the body, the pregnant couple is taught how to use communication techniques to ensure only positive people and messages are able to influence their preparations. Affirmations are used to help create a positive image of childbirth and the expectation that your birth will be the calm, comfortable  experience that you want. Fear Release is integral to this process, allowing each person to address any fear, stress, concern or anxiety and then release it. Fear in labour creates tension, tension creates pain, then more fear, and the cycle continues and escalates.

The
BirthSkills program teaches a woman how to enter into self-hypnosis very quickly and easily, and create her own natural anaesthesia whenever and wherever she needs it. She has total control over her body, and is an active participant in her birth process. As labour progresses, she relaxes even more, goes deeper within, trusting in her body's natural ability to give birth with ease and comfort. The father or birthing partner is also taught how to use these skills and how to take the woman even deeper in her relaxation.

Without a doubt, women using hypnosis are much calmer and more relaxed during labour. The physiological effects of relaxation during labour automatically creates more comfort - for you and your baby.

Look into hypnosis for childbirth as an option, both for yourself and for your baby. The deep relaxation has even helped many a nervous dad to cope as they prepare for their child’s birth! In addition, the skills you will learn for relaxation and hypnosis will benefit you for the rest of your life.

My dream is that every woman, everywhere, will know the joy of a safe, satisfying birth for both her baby and herself - one she'll need not forget.
