Chloe’s Birth Story

From about the second trimester I started prenatal yoga Nidra and relaxation breathing once a week and practiced at home. I also continued going to the gym (les mills pump and rpm), walking, swimming and pregnancy exercise classes at the Canberra Hospital . I worked at Queanbeyan Hospital (NSW) as a Registered Midwife until 37 weeks, however I was ready for maternity leave at 35 weeks.

I chose the Canberra Midwifery Program (one to one midwifery) as I wanted to see the same midwife through my pregnancy, labour and birth, and postnatally. I liked this model of care because I knew my midwife and I was confident that the midwife would advocate for me. Tim my partner was very much involved.

Through the practice of Yoga Nidra, I was able to use my breath to relax and meditate on my Sankalpa (positive affirmation). I also used a Birth Power CD/ book which affirmed my birth affirmations. Like all women I did focus on the birth but as it was drawing nearer I added something to my birth plan and that was; “ Through my birth power, I want to come away from my baby’s birth feeling powerful, a strong women and really proud of myself”. So no many what happens, if I didn’t get a water birth or if I teared and so on it didn’t matter along as I was part of the decision making and I had used all the tools I practiced I would be happy. I also wanted to focus on being a new mum.

So May 10th came, my due date. I decided to have acupuncture to help things along. I had acupuncture at 1pm and had a “bloody” show at 0100am the next morning (May 11th). I told Tim and he said to go back to bed, which I did. I could not sleep but I rested my body and used the yoga Nidra poses I had practiced to keep comfortable and maintain my energy.

0700am Tim contacted YoungOak my midwife to update her. I was having period like pain and I was coping well and she did not need to do a home visit.

12pm YoungOak did a home visit. She performed a VE and I was 2cm. I stated to YoungOak “I hate to do this to you but be ready at 0100am” I don’t why I said that. So Tim and I continue at home.

Every time I had a contraction I would get Tim to read from the Birth Power book because I wanted to hear his voice. Tim’s voice was like a cue to go within my body and not let the contraction take over. Then I would get Tim to put the Birth power CD on and I would listen to that. I walked around our house, I kept upright the majority of the time no other position felt comfortable. I didn’t feel hungry. I had breakfast and a piece of toast for lunch. I kept drinking the whole time. At some point Tim made a chocolate birthday cake to celebrate the birth which was great. I would also remind Tim to tell me to breathe when I had a contraction. Tim was able to tell me if I using my breath or not which really helped when working through the tension in my body. So basically Tim and I stayed at home while I laboured and we kept in contact with YoungOak via the phone. During this time I could tell my cervix was opening up because I had a pad on to monitor the mucus and it was regular and getting heavier. At about 9pm I went to the toilet to check my pad and there was large mucus on the pad and I had a feeling that was it, my cervix is completely open. So I told Tim call YoungOak we are coming in. At that point something happen, my focus obviously changed and I was telling Tim “I didn’t feel in control”. This could have been transition.

So at about 11pm we left for the Birthing Unit I am not sure what happen to time between 9 and 11pm. Tim packed the car and the Birthday Cake. We also had presents for each other to celebrate.

So I am in the back of the 4wd no seat belt breathing through contractions. I felt every bump in the road. About 15 min into the journey my waters ruptured and it was clear. So at this point I was definitely fully dilated and with every contraction if felt like the baby was going to fall out. WOW! I made Tim stop because I felt sick but I didn’t vomit and then we continued. I remember Tim’s last comment was “we are not coming home without a baby”.

Not sure when we got to the birthing centre (BC) time was a blur. YoungOak performed a VE as I thought I was fully. The bath was running I got in and everything was progressing wonderfully. I eventually was got out of the bath because I could not keep my body below the water because with every contraction I would leap into the standing position as I was doing at home. So I stood out of the bath held on to Tim and then rest on the toilet seat between each push. I was at the pushing stage when I arrived at the BC. Then after a few pushes not sure how many YoungOak guided my head to feel a head, WOW! So that was a great motivation. Then with each contraction my baby was getting closer. I will just mention that when I got to the BC I didn’t want anyone to talk to me unless they really had to. I was so focused.

I birthed my baby girl, Chloe at 0122am on the 12th May in the squatting position with my arms tightly around Tim’s neck. I wanted Tim to catch Chloe but he was holding me up so he cut the cord. When Chloe was born Tim and I just looked at each other we were in disbelief. We didn’t cry but we could close our mouths could we couldn’t believe what just happen. I was on top of the world.

YoungOak said to me later “you had a natural birth”. I asked her “what do you mean”. “Well you didn’t ask for pain relief”. “That’s because I didn’t even think about that I was not in pain”. YoungOak also thanked me for the 0100am warning and wondered how I knew Chloe would be born then. I still don’t know.

The only medical intervention I had was sutures to a 1cm vaginal wall tear. YoungOak was concerned it may continue to bleed so it was a safety factor. I breast feed within 1 hour of her birth.
