Welcome your baby in calmness and confidence.

Enjoy the birth of your child, understand the processes and be empowered by knowledge about your birthing choices.

   Hi Shari

We just wanted to drop you a quick email to let you know our son, Lachlan arrived in the world at 2:52pm Monday

afternoon. The whole experience was fantastic and we used your CD nearly constantly throughout labour.

While we fully achieved healthy baby and healthy mum (and proud as punch dad) we also had a completely drug free

    birth, which was great.

Thanks so much for working with us to prepare for this wonderful experience.

Welcome to BirthSkills, a program for those wanting a calm, confident and more comfortable birthing and parenting experience.

Learn:

Knowledge and techniques for a calm and positive pregnancy & birthing experience.

Relaxation, mind/body awareness and self-hypnosis.

Skills that will help you and your family to live a calm and happy life together and develop resilience against postnatal depression and anxiety.

As a brief outline: the program covers fear and fear release, breathing, the physiology and endocrinology of birthing, mind/body communication, self-hypnosis techniques, techniques and suggestions for partners, and other pragmatic things like positions, choices during labour and birthing and some postnatal info.

The BirthSkills program is especially appealing to those women seeking to have a natural, drug-free birth. However, circumstances sometimes arise which mean this cannot always be the case.

The Program prepares couples for all types of birthing experiences with a focus on the end goal always being:

Healthy Mum, Healthy Bub.

There is no pressure or bias towards one particular type of birthing being 'better' than another as long as everyone is happy and healthy at the end. The program is about welcome as much as it is about birthing.

However, there are a number of means by which the BirthSkills program can help to better place you for having the ideal birth experience:

How the program helps to promote natural birth

Informs expectant parents. The BirthSkills program helps mothers and partners to become aware of their choices, including the natural aids that research has shown to be useful and how they might help during labour.

Educates the Birthing Partner. Studies show that mothers who use a professional labour companion (private midwife or doula) are much less likely to have a surgical birth. A well-informed and assertive partner or father-to-be can be just as helpful with the right preparation. BirthSkills partners are well informed about the stages of labour, about the physiology and endocrinology of birthing, and how to support their partner They are also skilled in the use of relaxation and calming techniques.

Teaches practical skills. The BirthSkills program informs women about practical things that they can do in preparation for birthing. Choices about positions for birthing, evidence supporting perineal massage and correct methods for conditioning the pelvic floor are some of the topics covered.

Removes fear. There is boundless evidence, empirical and anecdotal, that shows how fear affects labour. The BirthSkills program is designed to remove the sources of this fear and replace these with knowledge and confidence.

Develops trust. When women believe that their delivery system will work they  place themselves in a position to work with their bodies; contributing to the efficiency and quality of the process. BirthSkills mums are encouraged to surround themselves with positive support people who believe that they can do it. These women practice the evidence-based techniques and become skilled in the art of birthing.

Encourages healthy habits - Nutrition and Exercise.
