Shari Read

Shari developed the BirthSkills program after the birth of her first child, Logan. The program evolved originally when Shari's husband, Ashley, suggested the use of hypnosis during the pregnancy for relaxation and to relieve anxiety. Shari also discovered how difficult it was to get hold of good information about the labour process, how the uterus works and why so many women are fearful or anxious about birthing and motherhood. Together, these experiences formed the basis for the BirthSkills program

Our son was born using hypnosis and relaxation. I remained calm and in control without the need for pain medication. I prepared myself during my pregnancy by being as relaxed and healthy as possible. I had regular massage and maintained my fitness. When Logan was born I was alert and had energy to bond and feed. I was able to welcome my baby with all my heart and mind. A wonderful and empowering experience that has enhanced my life more than I could ever have imagined .

Shari has recently birthed her second child Ebony, and despite Ebony being almost 2 weeks past her due date and more than 4.5kgs when born, it was a calm and welcoming experience for all. I have learnt so much, both from my own research and from all of the women I have worked with over the past years. Working with my wonderful midwife Marie Heath made Ebony's pregnancy an even more enlightening and empowering experience.

As a psychologist, the BirthSkills program just makes sense, understanding the flight and fight response and the mind-body communication that influences birthing helps people to understand what they can do to help the process along. As a mum, the program is about sharing the wonderful things about birthing and parenting and helping to overcome the negativity that surrounds birth for so many people.
