email received 30/08/09 - "I wanted to tell you that I am finding your BirthSkills book so wonderful. At least two or three occasions now I have been drawn to just open it randomly, and each time it has opened right on the information that is exactly what I need at that time. I find it so reassuring to have it as a resource and just trust that it brings me what I need when I need it. So thank you for creating this wonderful and powerful book".

You’re going to have a baby. Friends, family and well meaning busy-bodies are telling you all sorts of things about labour and what to do (possibly while patting your belly as if it were their own). Your obstetrician or midwife has told you not to worry about anything; and meanwhile you are thinking about it 24/7.

If you would like to feel in control during labour, and armed with good (evidence-based) suggestions for what can get you through this most amazing event without completely losing the plot – then this is the book for you.

The BirthSkills Book, written by Dr Shari Read, a mum and mind/body therapist with a strong background in psychology and natural medicine, is for every mum, and will help you create the birth experience you are hoping for.

The five sections of the book take you on a journey through Awareness, Trust, Work, Choices and Welcome, leaving you empowered, free of fear and looking forward to welcoming your baby into your family.

You will know exactly what is happening in your body and why labour feels the way it does. You will know how to help your body and baby through labour and how to manage the sensations (aka pain). You and your partner will know what to ask for, when to ask for it and how to work with your care providers to ensure you reach your end goal Healthy Mum, Healthy Bub. Happy family. You will also develop skills that will help you in the early days of parenting, making you more resilient to postnatal difficulties.

The BirthSkills Book is for any woman or couple, hoping to welcome their baby with love and calmness.

Hi Shari
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

I gave birth to my baby boy on the 5th of May using the BirthSkills techniques and it was the most wonderful experience of my life.
I went into labour at 1.30am and the surges were 10 mins apart.  Because I had had a c-section previously the hospital told me to come straight in.  We arrived at the hospital at 4am and I was already 3cm dilated.  I was put in the ward because my labour was progressing quite slowly with the surges remaining at 10 mins apart all day until about 4pm.  I remained calm and confident the whole time and stayed on my feet using my breathing and some of the positions in The BirthSkills Book.

As the surges strengthened I read my affirmations and refocused my mind.  At 4pm the surges were every 3 mins and were quite intense.  I went to the birth suite at this time, and I was 8cm dilated.  The pushing seemed to go on forever and I did use the gas, but I still used my breathing and thought about the things I learnt from BirthSkills.  Baby Isaac was born at 6.45 pm and was 8 pounds 9 ounces and was 54cm long.

Thank you so much for providing me with the tools to have a wonderful birth, I am so proud of what I have achieved, I never thought I could manage something like this.

Thanks again,
Robyne
